Railway trial section with geocomposite positioned beneath the ballast bed for lifetime extension of track geometry

  • Original language description

In complex geological conditions, due to the occurrence of the so-called pumping effect and the absence of adequate sub-ballast, fine-grained soil particles are gradually pushed into the ballast on railway tracks with high traffic volumes causing the subsequent deterioration of the quality of track geometric parameters. A pro-gressive method that prevents the ballast bed contamination with fine-grained soil from the subsoil contrib-uting, at the same time, to increased stability of the ballast bed is the use of reinforcing or stabilization geo-composites placed under the ballast. To verify the effectiveness of this method, a test section with a geocom-posite consisting of a welded biaxial geogrid and non-woven geotextile was established in the Czech Republic in 2012. The test section is subjected to long-term monitoring and compared with the adjoining railway track sections. The article summarizes the findings obtained from the establishment of the test section and its moni-toring up-to-now.
