Combined effect of new type of cellulose fibers and reclaimed asphalt on performance characteristics of stone mastic asphalt mix

  • Original language description

Stone mastic asphalt mix (SMA) represents the most advance type of wearing course used in pavement engi-neering. It is a gap-graded asphalt mixture type with higher content of usually polymer modified bitumen. This sets some additional challenges for such asphalt mixture since it is on one hand necessary to avoid un-necessary bitumen drainage (bleeding) and on the other hand if the target is to use reclaimed asphalt atten-tion has to be paid to the final grading to deliver required performance characteristics. Within the research done at the Czech Technical University in Prague new type of a cellulose based fibers was assessed on one type of SMA11 asphalt mixture. This was combined with different additives used for improved deformation (stiffness) behavior of the mix. Some mix variants were further changed by adding 10 % or 30 % reclaimed asphalt. The reclaimed asphalt was selected from one source and a screened material of 0-11 mm grading was used with known bitumen content. The results have shown the applicability of the new type of cellulose fibers even when some characteristics were slightly decreased. On the other hand reclaimed asphalt has usu-ally positive effect on stiffness and rutting characteristics what is expected due to the aged bitumen in the reclaimed asphalt. This additionally did not have negative impact on behavior of the mixture in the range of low temperatures.
