Durability assessment of stones for renovation of historic buildings
Original language description
The primary concern in selection of stones for renovation of historic buildings is authenticity. Unfortunately many of quarries used as source of building blocks are abandoned nowadays and an alternative source of rock has to be employed. In this case again the appearance and compatibility with the current structure are crucial but durability of the rock should be taken into account as well. The present paper deals with durability of several kinds of sandstones with high porosity which are available for renovation works in Czech Republic. The durability of stones is conventionally assessed by means of freezing/thawing cycles and measurement of dynamic Young’s modulus of stone. Its decrease with number of loading cycles is able to detect progress of cracks and fissures in the material. Nevertheless the freezing cycles are not the only one environmental impact on stones; they are heavily damaged also by salts crystallization in pores. The importance of factors influencing the stones’ sensitivity to particular environmental actions such are their mechanical properties and microstructure are discussed. The obtained results will help to ensure responsible selection of renovation stones whose sufficient durability is contributing to reduction of natural resources consumption.
