DURABILITY PARAMETERS OF FINE GRAIN CRETACEOUS SANDSTONE (HOŘICE, CZECH REPUBLIC)

  • Original language description

Sandstone quarried in Hořice area in Bohemian Cretaceous Basin has been widely used, due to its good workability and attractive appearance, as construction, renovation and decorative stone in Central European countries. It is an example of clayey quartz arenite with kaolinite matrix and high porosity. The porous rocks are frequently damaged by moisture and salt action, or namely by volume changes induced by these media. The fabric of given rock is obviously an important parameter controlling its durability; the Hořice sandstone involves bimodal pore system composed by intergranular capillaries and fine pores present in matrix. The sensitivity of Hořice sandstone to frost action was characterized dynamic Young modulus and tensile splitting strength decrease after freezing cycles. The resistance to salt crystallization was studied by cyclic crystallization experiment employing sodium carbonate, sodium chloride and sodium sulfate; their detrimental effects were highly dissimilar in dependence on crystallization pressure. It can be concluded that Hořice sandstone is stable when it is exposed to water freezing action and sodium chloride crystallization, while sodium carbonate and sulfate are significantly damaging this stone. The published data can be helpful in cases when the Hořice sandstone will be under consideration for a new application in severe environment as well as for historical-structural survey of buildings and sculptures made from this stone.
