TC2-3: Report: Sampling methodology
Original language description
Posterior PDFs of material parameters and prescribed PDFs of boundary conditions define an uncertainty to be propagated through the FE model of the thrust chamber in order to obtain the probability distribution of the model response. As the most general method, the Monte Carlo sampling (MCS) is employed in order to sample the PDFs of model response components and compute the structural life PDF. However, MCS requires large number of samples, especially when applied to describe the low probability regions. Hence, a surrogate of the model response is constructed utilizing several meta-models. Fast evaluations of the surrogates will then replace more time-consuming model simulations within the MCS. The quality of any surrogate model depends on a quality of Design of Experiments (DoE), i.e. choice of a set of simulations, used for surrogate construction. The regression method based on different optimized Latin Hypercube Sampling is compared with quasirandom sequences. The choice of an appropriate strategy will reflect a possibility of a future adaptive extension of the existing DoE with the aim of reducing the surrogate error. The attention will be paid also to the projective properties of the DoE which become important when first results of uncertainty propagation reveal an unimportance of some of the parameters.
