Examination of water susceptibility of ACbin type of asphalt mixtures with selected adhesion promoters and microfillers
Original language description
When bituminous binder is mixed with aggregate, the bitumen molecules and active spots (ionic particles) on the surface of the aggregate interact with each other. The surfaces of individual types of aggregate differ by their mineralogy and petrographic composition, structure and texture – air voids size and quantity, roughness. These characteristics determine the quantity, strength and durability of such active spots (i.e. spots capable of creating connections with the bitumen) which can be detected on the surface of the aggregate. Bituminous binders differ by chemical composition; 95 % of bitumen originates from crude oil residues – the last product in the oil refinement process, which is the distilled residue of black oil, which can be used directly or modified further e.g. by oxidising or modification by other additives. In the recent years, there has been a recurring discussion over the deteriorating quality of bitumen, which might be manifest in faster asphalt mix ageing, increasing brittleness, lower resistance to water immersion, deteriorating adhesion etc. This report attempts at comparing the two groups of additives aiming to exploit the potential of mechanical-chemical activation for reclaimed concrete and limestone waste filler or sludge, and comparing the new generation of chemical additives based on phosphorus compounds.
