The role of green roofs to mitigate urban heat island effect
Original language description
Green roof infrastructure has become a multi-million dollar industry in Germany and is gaining popularity in other European countries as well as in other countries all over the world. Green roofs are more than just soil and plants on a roof, but consists of specialized membranes and drainage barriers to support the growing of vegetation on top of buildings. The mitigation of the urban heat islands and the reduction of cooling loads are the main advantages of this roofing system. Therefore, green roofs could play a role in helping Czech, Brazilian, and other cities adapt to climate change. The objective of this research is to evaluate the effect of the green roofs on reduction of excess heat in two urban areas with different climate conditions; Prague and Rio de Janeiro. This effect will be tested in terms of type of the roofs; conventional roof, extensive green roof, and intensive green roof. Computer simulation is selected as the main study approach in this research. The computer simulation tool, which was chosen in this work, is ENVI-met according to the capabilities of this software in modelling greenery and urban fabric.
