The Contribution of Green Roofs in Ameliorating the Urban Heat Island Effect

  • Original language description

The city centers are characterized by the absence of vegetation and the dominant presence of impermeable surfaces made of asphalt and concrete. This is leading to significant increases in the air temperatures and the surface temperatures which are higher than the temperatures of countryside. Thus, green roofs can play an important role in cooling buildings and cities. In order to quantify this contribution, it is essential to conduct experimental and modeling studies. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the effect of the vegetated roofs on reduction of excess heat in three urban areas with different climate conditions; Prague, Rio de Janeiro, and Sydney. The research adopts a neighborhood analysis by modelling a specific area within the case study cities on a 600m x 600m grid. Three types of green roofs are modelled using computer simulation, ENVI-met. The results of this research have shown that installation of green roofs is an effective strategy in tackling heat islands.
