Thermal Analysis of Solid Glass Brick Wall Exposed to Fire

  • Original language description

Using solid glass bricks for masonry is very innovative solution and represents a challenge to architects because of its unique aesthetic properties. Glass walls can be used for many application including facades, windows and partition walls but can also serve as load-bearing structures. The wall is assembled from solid glass bricks and cement-based mortar in the same way as the traditional masonry. Although the wall seems to be similar to conventional wall made from ceramic or concrete bricks, there is no knowledge about the fire performance. The glass as transparent material has different properties in terms of heat transfer, relatively low melting temperature and is sensitive to thermal gradient and thermal shocks. Small scale fire test was conducted in November 2017 in cooperation with the Vitrablock company. The wall sized 500x520 mm was exposed to standard fire curve for 120 minutes. Numerical analysis based on finite difference method and predicting the temperature distribution is presented.
