    Principal of strengthening of historical steel bridges with use of shape memory alloys (SMA) is discussed in this paper. Application of iron-based shape memory alloy (Fe-SMA) for the strengthening of a historical roadway bridge in Petrov nad Desnou is presented. SMA-strengthening method focuses on prestressing of critical members with use of the materials shape memory effect (SME). The SME is material property allowing the deformed SMA to return to its original shape upon heating and subsequent cooling.
