Distortional buckling resistance of intermediate stiffeners in stainless steel cold-formed profiles

  • Original language description

The presented numerical study is focused on the resistance of compressed stainless steel cold-formed elements with an intermediate stiffener; this is typical of profiled sheeting flanges. The numerical model of a compressed stiffened element was validated on tests from literature. These adopted test results were substantially extended by a numerical parametric study to cover the whole slenderness range of stiffeners, their common geometries, as well as material diagrams typical of austenitic, duplex, and ferritic cold-formed stainless steels. Finally, the distortional buckling curve currently used in Eurocode 3 was found to be significantly unsafe. The design procedure was therefore modified – a lower distortional buckling curve was proposed. The proposed method was confirmed by the reliability study according to the Eurocode safety requirements. In addition, carbon steel models were also investigated with obtaining unsatisfactory results regarding the codified design procedure.
