Protect the steel elements with wood panelling is one of options of fire protection. The article presents possibilities for determining the distance of cracks in the wood to refine the calculation model of heat transfer to the structure. The experiments performed confirmed the accuracy of the approach of calculating the prediction of the formation of fissures, using the knowledge of thermomechanical phenomena induced by the shrinkage of the charred layer due to different temperatures on the surface of fire protection material and protected steel. The lessons learned may be used for advanced crack modelling techniques combined with pyrolysis and wood charring rate.
