Experimental Analysis of Static Plate Load Test According to Czech, French and German Methodology

  • Original language description

One of the methods for verifying the deformation resistance of the railway substructure is the static plate load test, in which the tested layer is loaded by a circular plate while monitoring the stress under the plate and its displacement. The result of the test evaluation is the deformation modulus, which expresses the stiffness of the structure. For historical reasons, many countries have a specific way of performing and evaluating this test, which is codified in relevant national standards and regulations. As a part of the preparation for the construction of high-speed railway lines in the Czech Republic, the French method of evaluation the railway substructure is being adapted. A specific case will be the section of high-speed railway line connecting Prague and Dresden, where the substructure will be evaluated according to German regulations. In order to successfully adapt the evaluation of deformation resistance of the railway substructure according to French and German regulations to Czech conditions, it is necessary to interpret the required values correctly. This can be solved by finding correlations between the results of the tests carried out and evaluated according to Czech and French, respectively according to Czech and German methodology. The paper deals with the analysis of performing and evaluation of the static plate load test according to the three mentioned methodologies. It aims to establish the correlation between their results based on performed experimental tests. The paper describes and compares the procedures of the three methodologies according to relevant national technical regulations and standards. Experimental measurements carried out in external conditions – in a quarry environment and on three railway line structures – are described. The results of static plate load tests are statistically evaluated against each other and the estimates of correlation relationships are established for the observed materials used in the railway substructure and sub-ballast layers. Based on the evaluated results, a significant agreement can be observed in the comparison of the values of the modulus of deformation determined from the second load cycle.
