Comparative study of the stiffness modulus using selected test methods - 4-point bending test and indirect tensile test in the pavement layer

  • Original language description

Stiffness of an asphalt mixture is of paramount importance in defining how well the pavement performs and is primary to the analysis of traffic loading response on the roads. According to literature, a correlation between stiffness and other mixture properties was found, and thus it can be considerate as a fundamental criterion to evaluate asphalt mix performance. There are several tests for stiffness determination including direct and indirect tensile tests and bending tests, test performed under a sinusoidal loading or other controlled loading and using different types of specimens. The present paper deals with the correlation between two different methodologies of stiffness tests measurements – indirect tensile test on cylindrical specimen with pulse load form (IT-CY) and 4-point bending test with prismatic specimens (4PB-PR) measurements. A total of 54 mixtures was manufactured and tested for the purpose of this study covering different structural pavement layers.
