How to compare asphalt stiffness if different test procedures are applied?
Original language description
The stiffness of an asphalt mixture which is determined as either stiffness modulus, dynamic modulus or complex modulus is a fundamental parameter in the understanding of the mixture strain behavior. It is usually also an essential design parameter of asphalt pavements. Accord-ing to the European standards EN 12697-26, various test methods can be performed in order to determine this characteristic. These tests are varying according to the loading type (principle) and the specimen dimensions and shape. Countries often specify their preference for adopting one particular test method, nevertheless if same type of asphalt mixture from two different countries shall be compared in terms of stiffness it can be difficult to not compare apples and pears. This paper deals with the study of three test methods: the 2-point bending test on trape-zoidal specimens (2PB–TR), the 4-point bending test on prismatic specimens (4PB–PR), and the indirect tension test on cylindrical specimens (IT-CY) used on a set of various asphalt mix-tures representing different structural pavement layers. In some datasets only IT-CY and one of the remaining test method is compared, in few cases on identical asphalt mixtures all three test methods are compared in terms of stiffness. The results show that the dual comparison of these tests, i.e. IT-CY and 4PB-PR, and 4PB-PR and 2PB-TR have indicated good correlation be-tween each other. However, the comparison between the three tests did not substantiate to any general correlation.
