MMODELLING OF TUNNELLING INDUCED SETTLEMENT USING 2D FINITE ELEMENT METHOD

  • Original language description

When shallow tunnels are driven, deformations of ground mass usually reach up to the ground surface. A reliable prediction of surface settlement during the tunnel excavations remains to be a fundamental issue. The simplest approach is to use empirical or analytical methods. Many of them were developed for mining engineering purposes, but today mathematical modelling (for instance FEM) is commonly used. Because the deformation during tunnel excavation is a typical 3D problem, the way of introducing the behaviour of the rock mass in the missing third dimension to the 2D model has an important role for the reliability of the results. The aim of this paper is to present some methods for the 2D FEM calculation of soil settlement in tunnelling. These are core support method, lining reduction method, stress reduction method (beta method), contraction method, gap method and 2D3D method.
