Thermal Expansion of Illitic Clay and CaCO3 Mixtures During Thermal Treatment up to 1200 °C

  • Original language description

The paper deals with thermodilatometric analysis of illitic clay – calcium carbonate mixtures. The samples are made by dry pressing from a mixture of illitic clay and CaCO3 with 6% addition of polyvinyl alcohol in the form of 3% solution. Polyvinyl alcohol-free samples are also produced. Samples with different CaCO3 contents, namely 17.6%, 21.6%, and 25.6%, are used for the measurements. Thermodilatometry measurements is performed using a horizontal push-rod corundum dilatometer in the temperature range from 30 °C to 1200 °C with a linear heating rate of 5 °C/min. The influence of polyvinyl alcohol and the amount of CaCO3 on the relative thermal expansion of the samples is investigated. The most satisfactory result of relative thermal expansion is found in the case of samples with polyvinyl alcohol and with CaCO3 content of 21.6 %, where the relative expansion recorded at 1200 °C is 1%.
