Thermoelectric properties of alkali-activated metashale composite with graphite powder
Original language description
The utilization of construction materials for thermoelectric energy harvesting is a concept with high potential for practical civil engineering applications. However, common cementitious and alkali-activated materials do not possess favorable thermoelectric properties. Doping of these materials by electrically admixtures ensures a significant enhancement that, however, cannot compete with the thermoelectric properties of special semiconductors. Nevertheless, the design and optimization of construction materials with such an energy conversion ability is meaningful due to the high surface area of large constructions that are exposed to surrounding energy sources (solar energy, industrial waste heat) ensuring a significant gradient between the surface and the temperature in the material. In the paper, the apparatus designed for simple thermoelectric measurements is introduced, as well as an example of measurement performed on the geopolymer composite based on metashale, potassium silicate + hydroxide activator, and graphite powder in the amount of 8 wt. %.
