Options for strengthening the existing bridge structure using UHPFRC

  • Original language description

Within the framework of expert activities of the Department of Concrete and Masonry Structures of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at CTU in Prague, a design for strengthening a segmental bridge over the Rokytka river in Prague was proposed. The first step was to determine the current condition of the bridge and possibilities of its further use. The next step was to apply a solution that, with a modern approach, would ensure the serviceability of the bridge for decades. The aim was to find solution that would be feasible while partially maintaining traffic on the bridge and would be advantageous in terms of overall construction cost. Under the circumstances given by layout and type of the structure, UHPFRC overlay was determined to be solution perfectly meeting the requirements. The proposed design enables increase in load-capacity, but most importantly is beneficial for durability and resistance of superstructure to environmental conditions.
