CRACKS IN THE CHARRED LAYER OF TIMBER PANELS: FIRE EXPERIMENTS AND PROBABILISTIC SOLUTION

  • Original language description

This article presents a calculation method to predict crack evolution in the charred layer of massive timber in the context of fire resistance. The focus is made on the calculation of cracks distances, which is studied both numerically using probabilistic approach and experimentally. Numerical calculation is based on an analytical solution covering influence of wood properties during fire. Summary of knowledge on material properties and charred layer evolution during fire are given in the paper, as these strongly influence the crack evolution. The experimental part involves testing of two different thicknesses of wood samples. Results in terms of crack distances, their standard deviations and means were analysed and compared to the measured values. The study confirmed that the used analytical solution can be used to predict the distance between cracks for elements of the wood panel formed during combustion, but with some limitations. The limitations are related to the thickness of the elements and also to the time of application of the load.
