Since 2003, Tarayana Foundation has supported construction of more than 2,600 houses in rural Bhutan. With over 2,000 new requests pending, the Foundation is moving towards a next phase with aim to provide not just more but better homes with focus on sustainability and resilience to climate change. To research this topic and find most suitable solutions for rural community construction, 3 prototype buildings are currently under construction with support from Karuna Foundation. Rural development has to start with decent home. Today, houses in remote villages are characterized by rundown conditions and makeshift structures unfit for inhabitation. Building techniques in rural areas hasn't change much for the past centuries. Even new houses are poorly designed wasting space and resources while vulnerable to natural disasters. Two prototype buildings, one build out of bamboo, the other with timber and hempcrete infill, are under construction in TSHAR Bamboo Institute in Kalapang, Mongar. This institute now serves as a training ground for capacity building amongst Bhutanese construction professionals organizing workshop mainly for students and faculties from College of Science and Technology (CST) in Phuentsholing. This workshop for faculties and technicians from CST aims to enhance a knowledge of sustainable construction in rural Bhutan using natural materials like bamboo, hemp, timber and mud. Theory lectures focus on introduction of Tarayana's Rural Housing Project, innovative use of naturally sourced materials in construction and basic principles of implementing insulation and energy efficient principles. Practical sessions revolve around the real construction of two prototype houses with focus on innovative light weight staggered timber frame as an alternative to traditional Bhutanese rabsel construction, mixing and casting hempcrete, fabrication of air-tight windows using limited resources and tools and constructing load-bearing frame out of bamboo.
