Staggered Lightweight Timber Frame Alternative to Traditional Bhutanese Ekra Wall Construction Method

  • Original language description

This method focuses on an alternative construction method for traditional Bhutanese timber frame with infill called ekra. The modification comes in a form of light weight staggered timber frame with diagonally woven bamboo lattice for lateral stability and infill support. During March and April 2025 there were alternative ekra walls with hempcrete infill and diagonal bamboo lattice built on two prototype buildings in Paro, Gomche village and TSHAR Institute in Mongar, Kalapang. These structures are part of fully functional buildings serving as a family house in Paro and staff quarters in TSHAR Institute.
