Numerical model to simulate the effect of ionizing radiation on concrete
Original language description
The numerical model developed within the project provides the ability to predict radiation induced volumetric expansion (RIVE) of concrete, the associated reduction of its mechanical properties, and the development of damage as a function of the material composition, neutron spectrum, neutron and gamma radiation doses, and temperature. The model has been successfully implemented through a combined numerical approach based on the Rigid Body Spring Model (RBSM) and the Finite Element Method (FEM). Within this framework, RBSM is used to simulate the behavior and radiation induced expansion of aggregates, while FEM captures the mechanical response of the cement paste, making it possible to model the hierarchical structure of mortar and concrete. This hybrid modelling strategy significantly reduces computational demands while preserving sufficient detail to reproduce the relevant physical mechanisms. For the prediction of aggregate behavior, the model incorporates and further develops the pre existing RIVE aggregate model originally created by researchers at CTU in Prague. The model reliably captures both the nonlinear RIVE behavior and the associated cracking processes, making it suitable for predictive analyses and for the interpretation and generalization of experimental findings.
