Original language description
The difference in the hip peak contact stress between the measured values and values estimated on the basis of the mathematical model can be caused by regional variations in the cartilage geometry and material properties. Region of thicker and stiffer articular cartilage within the load - bearing area considerably increases the hip peak contact stress. However, the area of the greater contact stress does not considerably influence the contact stress distribution. Mathematical models are not suitable topredict exact values of Pmax in the hip joint if the exact geometry of the hip is not know but they may provide and accurate estimation of the contact stress distribution pattern.
