Health Monitoring of Structures with Fatigue Damage and Applied Composite Repair
Original language description
This work focuses on the development of a health-monitoring system that can be used on aircraft structure with fatigue cracks repaired by a composite patch. For the starting experiments, dog-bone type aluminum specimens loaded in tension-tension cycles were selected. On these specimens were pre-made central cracks ending with bored holes. Over the cracked areas were bonded carbon/epoxy patch repairs with embedded FBG sensors. The goal of the experiment was to use FBG sensors to detect stress redistribution in the composite repair due to the initiation of fatigue cracking or debonding on the repair patch edge. Real-time monitoring of FBG during the fatigue loading was successfully used for the detection of crack growth. This approach was also compared with static measurements during regular breaks of cyclic loading, when experimental specimens were loaded in tension and reflected spectrums from FBG were captured
