    Relationship between the polymerization shrinkage and overall mechanical response of a dental composite

    This study is focused on FE simulation of mechanical response of an advanced dental composite consisting of polymer resin and SiO2 filler. During the experimental work with the composite, discrepancy between tensile and compressive stiffness has been observed. Main goal of this work is to provide an accurate and reliable model of the composite, showing the different macroscopic response. Relationship between the difference of stiffness values and the shrinkage phenomenon in the resin during the curing process is discussed. Technique applied to simulate the experiment is based on a thermal analogy of the shrinkage process, which the dental resin undergoes during its polymerization The nature of developed shrinkage stress field is studied and an explanation of its development is presented. Comprehensive parametric study is carried out to investigate the dependence of the stiffness difference on various microstructural parameters.
