Vocal tract changes after voice therapy
Original language description
Phonation into a tube has been widely used for voice training and therapy. Practical observations suggest that voice tends to become immediately louder and feels easier to produce after such exercises. It has not been known, however, what changes occur in the vocal tract during and after the phonation into a tube. The present study analyzes Computer Tomography (CT) images of the shape of the vocal tract of a female subject before, during and after phonation into a tube. Acoustic consequences of the differences in the geometry and volumes of the supraglottal spaces are studied using three-dimensional finite-element models of the vocal tract derived from the CT-based vocal tract shapes.
