Computer modeling of the efect of vocal exercising with a tube on vocal tract sound power transfer
Original language description
Phonation into a tube has been widely used for voice training and therapy. The present study analyzes Computer Tomography (CT) images of the shape of the vocal tract of a female subject before, during and after phonation into a tube. Acoustic consequences of the differences in the geometry and volumes of the supraglottal spaces are studied using three-dimensional finite-element models of the vocal tract derived from the CT-based vocal tract shapes. Numerical simulations revealed an increased acoustic energy radiated out of the vocal tract after the tube-phonation. The results show that changes of the vocal tract shape remaining after the phonation into a tube allow a more efficient and economic phonation.
