The first prototype of custom electronics has been prepared and assembled. It generates the 50kHz sound burst signals emitted by the transducers and includes a 20 MHz transit-time counter that is stopped when an amplified sound signal from a receiving transducer crosses a predefined comparator threshold. Time-stamped sound transit time in one direction is sent to the supervisory computer via a communication port that can run RS232. The electronics also contains a DC-DC converter to generate the HV biasfor the ultrasonic transducers, settable in the range 180-360V. Data taking is controlled from the superior node in the control hierarchy - presently a computer running Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) PVSS software - that retrieve datafrom the electronics memory. Internal process of the electronics is controlled by the specially developed firmware by our team.
