Investigation of Composite Tubes Subjected to Impact or Quasi-Static Axial Compressive Loading
Original language description
The paper focuses on development of light-weight crash absorbers for large parts in public transport. The main goal has been to develop absorbers from fibre composites with extended absorption capacity and reduced mass. Composite tube when subjected to axial compressive loading fails either in a compressive failure or in a steady crushing mode. The steady crushing mode is characterized by failure of fibres due to bending of the tube's endings and also by delamination of the tube's layers. Coupons in form of tubes and bundles of tubes were subjected to compressive loading by quasi-static testing or by impact loading on a drop weight testing machine. The effect of design variables (composite lay-up, number of tubes) on a force-deformation characteristicof the coupon was investigated. Development of FE model of the coupons steady crushing is presented and compared with the experimental results.
