*This study describes the influence of a change in gross indicated efficiency on both net indicated efficiency and pumping losses (to obtain a constant value of b.m.e.p.) for a throttled spark ignition (SI) engine at part load. A mathematical model was developed to understand these interactions. The mathematical model was calibrated and also verified using experimental data. Experiments were carried out on a four-cylinder SI engine, natural gas fueled with stoichiometric concept. Moreover, a further goal of the experiments was to find a solution for increasing the gross indicated efficiency in comparison with a conventional optimal setting of the engine. Finally, a variant with special spark plug application was chosen as the best choice for this purpose. Experiments indicated that both the pumping losses and the net indicated efficiency increase with improvement in the gross indicated efficiency and vice versa, as expected.
