  • Original language description

The AIRCOOLER SPLIT is a result of our continuous development of portable and easy-to-use devices for cooling of various electronic components. The AIRCOOLER SPLIT was design to be used in a tight space and applications where the cooling unit cannot be placed in close vicinity of the components to be cooled down. For this reason, the two-stage cooling system was split and the small second stage cooling can be placed up to two meters apart for the larger and heavier first base stage unit. It can be used in particle physics or other high tech electronic development laboratories. The AIRCOOLER SPLIT driven only by stream of compressed air and can provide an outlet temperatures as low as -50°C at flows up to 30 Nl/min. The advantages of our solution with compressed air as a refrigerant over a glycol chillers, Peltier’s system or direct evaporation cooling systems are simplicity, low cost, reliability and cleanliness. Several AIRCOOLER SPLIT units are currently used in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN for the ATLAS Forward Physics experiment. Design and know-how owner - CTU Prague, Department of Physics (doc. Vacek research group).

  • Technical parameters

The AIRCOOLER SPLIT is a two-stage cooling system that uses vortex tube principle. It requires a compressed air supply at pressure starting from 4 bars for applications where only low cooling power and moderate temperatures are required up to 12 bars for the maximum cooling performance. The air consumption is around 250 Nl/min at 7 bar and 20°C. At this air pressure and temperature at the input the typical temperature and flow of the delivered cold air is 15 Nl/min and -55°C. These parameters can be adjusted by a two regulation valves. A pneumatic signal can be used for a regulation of both air flow and temperature in situations where either very stable temperature is required or air consumption has to be optimized. The two stages the primary one, located close to the cooled components and the primary one that can be placed up to two meters apart are interconnected by a special jacketed pipe. The pipe works as a counter flow heat exchanger increasing both the performance and efficiency of the cooling system.

  • Economical parameters

The AIRCOOLER SPLIT provides cost effective solutions to low temperature cooling. It can be employed in every workshop or laboratory even in clean environments where there is a compressed air distribution. The manufacturing cost of the initial prototype units is approximately 120 000 CZK which is on par with costs of commercial refrigeration units for laboratories that are able to achieve such low temperatures. It is important to note here that all delivered production units were manufactured under our supervision by Czech company DUO Opočno, CZ and supplied by the company to CERN. Total delivery cost of 6 units so far is close to 750 thousand CZK
