Original language description
A first prototype of hermetic metal foam air/air heat exchanger with extended inner surface was developed for an efficient cooling of electronic components and particle detectors by cold streams of air produced by our AIRCOOLER units. Since the construction of the heat exchanger is hermetic it can be placed in a vacuum chamber where the cooling air inlet and outlet tubes entering the heat exchanger body via feedthroughs in the chamber wall. An efficient heat exchange with the stream of cooling air is realized by the use of aluminium foam that fills the oblique shaped inner cavity of the heat exchanger and significantly expands inner contact surface of the heat exchanger. Technical parameters
The heat exchanger dimensions are 35 x 77 mm and the height is 13.5 mm. The bottom side (37 x 80 mm) can be in direct contact with the cooled electronic. The shell of the heat exchanger is made from machined aluminium. Three 8 mm connection ports are provided on the top side to allow for flexible arrangement of the air supply. The interior is divided into three section filled with the aluminium foam. The parameter of the aluminium foam is following: bulk density: 0.2 g/cm3, porosity: 93% and pores: 2/cm. Two variants were developed and tested. The first one is using an inference fit to hold the foam in palace and to provide the heat conduction between the foam and the heat exchanger aluminium shell. The second variant uses and aluminium filled epoxy glue that minimizes the thermal resistance and increases the performance of the heat exchanger.
Economical parameters
The cost of the heat exchanger is a sum of two main parts: machining of the aluminium box and the foam filler. The approximate cost of one single prototype unit capable to transfer efficiently about 20W in vacuum ambient is 12 thousand CZK. Foreseen applications would require typically between 6 and 12 heat exchanger units
