    Methodology for Efficiency Mapping of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors

    This paper presents a simple methodology for calculation of the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) efficiency map. The presented method requires only the machine nameplate data and allows to a system designer to estimate the efficiency for different operating conditions, such as a different driving cycle in traction applications. The method has been experimentally verified for both large (100 kW, 5000 RPM) and small (4.9 kW, 2000 RPM) PMSM. The accuracy, although not perfect, is sufficient for a system designer to make decisions e.g. for cooling based only on motor catalogue data. This can be done before the real motor is ordered and tested on a test stand more accurately.
