Equipment for microalgae primary dewatering and separation using gravitational and centrifugal forces
Original language description
This study reviewed the technologies applicable to microalgae dewatering and harvesting. A general overview of existing separation techniques, such as gravitational sedimentation, filtration, centrifugation, and flotation, was elaborated. Based on the experimental measurements, a sedimentation curve and sedimentation velocity were determined for microalgae cells. Furthermore, the concentration of the thickened microalgae mixture and the particle size distribution were measured as well. According to experimental data, the processing parameters of industrial scale separation units were specified. Moreover, this work describes the design methodology of the separation unit for the primary dewatering of microalgae mixture by gravitational and centrifugal forces. Based on this methodology, it is possible to determine the basic design and operating parameters. For the selected microalgae production in an industrial photobioreactor, a basic design of the equipment for harvesting and dewatering (circular settler, lamella settler, drum centrifuge, disk centrifuge) was elaborated.
