Functional sample of HP unit of the advanced two-stage boost system optimized for operation on gas SI ICE with power target of 1,8 MW while providing higher efficiency (hence lower CO2), lower pollutants (NOx) and faster transient response. The sample is expected to be tested experimentally on turbocharger test bed at PBST. The main focus is put on optimization of high-pressure turbine for specific needs of two-stage boost group under both steady operation and transient one. Optimized bearing system with high mechanical efficiency and lower lubricant volume flow rates for wide range of operating conditions will be applied. Detailed thermodynamic simulations will be performed to maximize engine performance while considering complex control of both engine and two-stage turbocharger systems – these also provide boundary conditions for other tasks. Turbine design optimization includes an identification of complex phenomenological model of both elastic-visco-plastic cyclic material response and low cycle fatigue while considering variable temperature for future life assessment.
