Study of material properties of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V used for hip arthroplasty after laser treatment

  • Original language description

Hip joint replacement is currently one of the most common orthopaedic surgeries, although short-term and long-term patient satisfaction varies widely. Hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant. Both the head of the femur and the joint socket (total endoprosthesis) are replaced. Nowadays, the total endoprosthesis is more widely used than the cervical endoprosthesis of the hip joint, where only the femoral head is replaced. Titanium alloy Ti6Al4V is one of the materials used for this purpose. Therefore, it is essential to investigate and improve its material properties. One of the possible methods is the laser treatment of the material by the Laser Shock Peening method, in which the material is hardened, and thus its resistance in the parts leading to the formation of cracks is improved.
