Development of Advanced Engine Brake for Heavy-Duty Vehicles
Original language description
Heavy-duty vehicles usually utilize an auxiliary braking device, which brings not only the safety benefit, but also the economic one, as it prolongs service intervals of friction brakes and allows higher downhill speed of the vehicle. The work focuses on the development of an advanced engine brake system of the “compression release” type, which works in two-stroke cycle. The development process utilized both simulation and experimental techniques. A 1-D simulation model of a contemporary HD engine was used for optimization of engine brake valve lift profiles while complying with several constraining parameters. Resulting camshafts were manufactured and mounted in a production engine together with a new valvetrain mechanism designed by a project partner. The following experiment yielded data for further validation of the 1-D simulation model. The objective of the project has been met and the article summarizes all relevant knowledge and methodology for the development of advanced “compression release” engine brake.
