    Optimization of a ducted-fan propulsion unit equipped with an internal combustion engine

    Currently, the development of a ducted-fan airplane - the UL-39, managed by the Czech Technical University in Prague, is underway. The advantage of such a concept is especially its increased efficiency at higher speeds compared to a propeller drive. In the case of a classic propeller drive, its efficiency depends mainly on the selected propeller and engine, while other parts of the aircraft have only a small influence. In contrast, in the case of a ducted-fan, in addition to the propeller itself, the flow paths also play a fundamental role in the overall efficiency. The entire issue is thus far more extensive and contains a number of areas that require deeper investigation. Two of those areas will be presented – design and optimization of inlet channel and aero-thermodynamic optimization of propulsion flow path with the heat source.
