Quantification of electrode wear in resistance welding
Original language description
This article deals with degradation of welding electrodes during resistance spot welding. Experiment in this paper focuses on development of a method for monitoring and quantification of electrode wear. 3D scanning using optical profilometry is used for obtaining 3D models of worn electrode caps. Data processing in Matlab and GOM Inspect is described same as evaluation of selected topography parameters. Three monitored topography parameters (volumetric changes in material, axial wear and change of contact area) have been defined. The experiment has been performed on six sets of samples of different steel materials and surface treatments so that different wear patterns can be monitored. All those materials and their coatings are used in automotive. The data obtained showed typical pattern for hot dip galvanized steel and other pattern for electrolytic zinc coated sheets within various materials and coatings. Significant rise in contact area was observed. The axial wear values used in applications for online monitoring have been verified and their range agrees with the findings of other authors.
