LASER HARDENING OF HEAT-TREATED CAST IRONS WITH NODULAR GRAPHITE
Original language description
The focus of the research in this paper is the use of laser surface hardening for the modification of tribological properties of ADI castings. Adi cast irons are a very progressive material used in demanding applications. For these applications, surface tribology is an important parameter. For this reason it is interesting to analyse the possibilities of improving the tribological properties. In the experimental part, samples of ADI cast irons were selected and processed under different isothermal endurance temperatures. This temperature has a major influence on the initial structure of ADI castings before laser hardening. This initial condition then influences the whole hardening process. Thus, a metallographic analysis was performed for the initial structures. The experimental part also includes the measurement of the microhardness of the hardened surface as a function of distance from the surface. Furthermore, a tribological test was performed, and the hardened surfaces (after the tribological test) were analyzed by electron microscopy. The experiment showed that the tribology of laser hardened surfaces of ADI cast irons is strongly influenced by their isothermal endurance temperature. It was further verified that a homogeneous martensitic layer can be achieved by laser. When testing the non-hardened surfaces, a trend for a decrease in the friction coefficient was then observed in relation to the isothermal endurance temperature of ADI cast irons. This phenomenon is probably due to the deformation of the surface layers, during which austenite was transformed into martensite
