USE OF SURFACE LASER HARDENING FOR ADI CAST IRON
Original language description
Cast iron is a relatively old material, which, however, is still widely used today due to its unique properties. For that reason, they are still the subject of a lot of research. Heattreated ADI cast iron is a particularly progressive material. Through heat treatment, this graphite cast irons acquire their typical ausferritic structure (this structure consists of acicular ferrite and high-carbon austenite). With this heat treatment, a multiple higher yield strength can be achieved compared to a cast iron structure. Castings thus achieve a very good ratio between their strength and weight. Carbon-stabilized austenite gives cast iron increased toughness. Due to these properties, ADI cast iron is often used, for example, for the production of gears, crankshafts and camshafts. These are applications in which it is important to consider tribological properties, which is why a number of different research papers deal with this topic. Currently, research is also focused on the possibilities of surface hardening of ADI cast iron with a laser, which is also dealt with in this article. This article includes metallographic cuttings of laser-hardened ADI cast iron samples, hardness measurements of the hardened surface, and a tribological experiment. A linear reciprocating motion was used for the tribological experiment and the values of the coefficient of friction were recorded during the test. The state of the worn surface after the tribological experiment was subsequently evaluated using scanning electron microscopy.
