Thermal Properties of Concrete Energy Accumulators

  • Original language description

The thermophysical properties of the materials used in thermal accumulators significantly affect the amount of heat that can be stored in the accumulators and also affect the kinetics of heat accumulation and deaccumulation. From the point of view of accumulators, where thermal energy is stored without changing the phase of the medium used for accumulation (sand, concrete, stone, ...), these are mainly the specific heat capacity and the thermal conductivity. There are many methods for determining these properties (ASTM C177/ISO 8302; ASTM C1113; ASTM E1269; ...). Their choice and use are influenced, and also limited, by the size of the sample used in determining these properties. This is not a problem in the case of determining the properties of homogeneous materials. However, in the case of heterogeneous materials, the size of the sample, and its representativeness, affect the results of determining thermal properties. In our paper, we deal with methods for determining the properties of a highly heterogeneous material used for the production of a thermal accumulator – recycled concrete, which contains various components (stone, recycled concrete, ...) with a very wide distribution of their size supplemented with a small amount of binder. The goal is to determine the basic average characteristics characterizing the entire sample, i.e. to determine the properties of a sample with a volume of the order of liters. We describe the methodology for determining these properties, or rather the methodology whose goal is to compare the properties of several mixtures with different compositions and select the most suitable mixture by comparing them.
