    The Economics of Short Rotation Coppices

    This paper addresses the problem of biomass as a crucial renewable energy source (RES) of energy in connection with execution of individual objectives of the Czech Republic according to both EU Directive 2001/77. The paper uses economic models of coppiceplantations of fast-growing tree species to predict long-run marginal costs on biomass grown for the purpose of energy generation. Economic models of plantations include all money flows induced by existence of a particular plantation. The resulting costof biomass is established on the condition that the investor will gain a profit from the capital invested as long as the plantation exists. Three alternatives of the respective calculation are presented, assuming different ways of plantation operation and ensuring both harvest and financing of some activities. Calculations reflect specific conditions in the Czech Republic and use input data from current experimental areas of coppice plantations of poplar and willow trees.
