Voltage Stabilisation in Industrial Applications Using STATCOM with Active Power
Original language description
Static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) is used to compensate reactive power. This allows voltage stabilization and improvement of power factor at the point of connection. STATCOM could be connected to the part of the power system or industrial load. Typical monitored object is an arc furnace, which has a character of variable load and thus negatively affects the quality of electricity at place of connection. STATCOM provides voltage stabilization and control using reactive power compensation. This method does not allow fully compensate all changes of power and voltage. Application of the compensator as a source of active power can reduce the negative influence of arc furnaces for the distribution network and improve power quality. The article describes a model of arc furnace and STATCOM with active power compensation. The last section described the results of measurement and calculation for industrial application.
