Dispersion relation for magnetically aligned electrostatic waves in weakly collisional plasmas

  • Original language description

In this paper the dispersion relation for magnetically aligned electrostatic waves in two component weakly collisional plasmas is derived analytically from kinetic and Maxwell equations. The conditions assumed in the beginning of calculations correspondto the ionospheric upper E-region conditions, and collisions on the RHS of the Boltzmann equation are approximated by the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) approximation. The presence of the E x B fields is typical for ionosphere. In this work the focus is onthe magnetically aligned waves, as a first approach. The problem in all three dimensions is more complicated due to the E x B drifts. In spite of the initial simplification, the results could help in explaining some of the phenomena observed in the upperlayers of the ionosphere, and can be used as a starting point for further numerical studies.
