Optimization of Microwave Hyperthermia Applicator System for Deep Placed Tumors Treatment in Head and Neck Area

  • Original language description

The purpose of this contribution is to optimize our hyperthermia applicator system intended for the tumor treatment in head and neck area. The system was redesigned to gain the focusing improved SAR and temperature distribution in large and deep seated tumors. For this purpose, two numerical phantoms: homogenous and 3D anatomical model were proposed. Three parameters were changing (applicators polarization, applicators distance between applicators and numerical model, water bolus temperature) observing their influence on reflection coefficient, SAR and temperature distribution in the treated area. For the best arrangement the SAR25 (71.3 %) and T41 (94 %) tumor coverage with reflection coefficient –24 dB were achieved. This is fully sufficient for the clinical utilization. The system improvement is representing a 22 % increase in SAR25 parameter compared to the original proposal for superficial tumors.
