From Philosophy to Science
Original language description
Many engineers and scientists consider philosophy to be useless, even harmful. The great physicist Stephen Hawking even said that philosophy is dead today, as everything can be solved by science. Ernst Mach and others tried to make philosophy more "scientific" by eliminating "meaningless" philosophical concepts and questions. Many of the shoots of the bushy tree of philosophy are indeed barren or dry, but on the other hand, countless philosophical ideas have something to say to today's man and even to today's science. In my book, I build on the ideas of ancient philosophers. I try to interpret (and re-interpret) them in the light of contemporary society and especially of exact science. I focus mainly on the methodology and foundations of physics and mathematics, and I also mention some current aspects of political philosophy.
