Network-bound Periodic Freight Train Paths - A Qualitative Generic Approach for Railway Capacity Management
Original language description
This paper deals with concept of network-bound periodic freight train paths in the context of Integrated Periodic Timetable (IPT) of passenger transport. The concept is understood as a freight analogy to IPT, seeking to build a bridge between freight train path allocation process and advanced quantitative railway operation research. In the first part, the concept is delivered from freight railway undertakings' (FRUs') requirements for train paths, as well as IPT principles, considering capacity utilization. An approach for design of freight train paths is proposed, including proposal of facultative supportive timetabling, technical and infrastructural measures. In the second part, case study of Prague node area is presented. Passenger periodic timetable from 2009/10 and freight train runtimes are used to test the approach.
