The Development of the Future Direction of Commodity Flows of Containerized Goods in Europe

  • Original language description

Although these days roughly 70% of the containerized goods are transported to ports in the North Sea, the recent development has contributed to the involvement of a large number of small and medium-sized European ports located in the south of the continent. This paper analyzes how ports are responding to this situation, what will be the development of transport strategies and the new direction of commodity flows, especially depending on increasing share of rail transport of containers between seaports and inland terminals of combined transport. Today the major share of the direction of the railway transportation routes for container falls upon ports of Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, etc. However, these freight corridors suffer from congestion and it is therefore desirable that in the consequent period the flow of containerized goods is partially streamlined to the new suitable routes considering their geographic position with the possibility of timesaving.
